The Good, The Bad, & The Ugly of GPT 5
Aug 11, 2025
So ChatGPT 5 released last week and is available for everyone.
Now this was supposed to be the best update ever...
But there's been a lot of mixed reviews online.
A Quick History of ChatGPT Models
When OpenAI first made ChatGPT publicly available, it launched with GPT 3.
Then in 2023 GPT 4 released.
GPT 4 was smarter, faster, and could handle way more complex tasks — it was like going from the first-ever iPhone to an iPhone X in one jump.
Fast forward a year, OpenAI announced a new model called GPT 4o.
This was my personal favorite model to use.
Too Many Models to Keep Up With
In 2024, OpenAI started releasing new GPT models left and right.
It was almost impossible to keep up with — especially since you could switch between models mid conversation.
If you were using GPT 4o and didn’t like a response it generated, you could rewrite it using a different model and compare results.
At any given time you had access to 5–8 different GPT models.
What Changed With GPT 5
But then OpenAI did something odd this time around.
Not only did they release three new models — GPT 5, GPT 5 thinking, and GPT 5 pro — they completely discontinued all the other GPT models that were available.
And now the internet is divided.
There are tons of people canceling their ChatGPT subscriptions in protest. Some are in favor of the changes made.
Where I Stand
Honestly... I'm a little disappointed.
I understand the thought process — if you discontinue all the other models and only leave GPT 5, you’ll get a lot more feedback in a shorter time frame to see how well the model actually works.
But ChatGPT has tons of other alternatives now.
If you don't like what OpenAI is doing, you can go use Claude, Perplexity, Grok, Copilot, Gemini, just to name a few.
They should’ve added GPT 5, got rid of GPT 4.1, and left the rest as "legacy" models so we can still use them.
